Peter Woodbury Chorus
                                                                                                          September 11, 2017

Dear 4th grade students and parents/guardians,
It will soon be time to start our 4th grade chorus here at Peter Woodbury School! This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to use their singing voices as part of a musical group and sing a variety of songs and styles. We will have several performances throughout the school year both during the school day and in the evening. Our first concert is scheduled for January 10, 2018 at 7:00 pm.

Chorus will be held on every Tuesday from 2:20 pm until 3:00 pm. Students will be called down from their classrooms at the end of the day and bring all of their belongings to the music room. Dismissal to parents/guardians will be at 3:00 pm. Please wait for your child in the lobby. If your child will be picked up at a later time you will need to make other arrangements.
Information about the after school program is available by calling the New Morning School at 669-3591. I am not able to stay after chorus due to my own childcare limitations.

In order for any chorus to perform well, all members must attend as many rehearsals as possible. After 3 unexcused absences per term (Fall/Spring) your child may be asked to no longer participate in chorus.  It is also important that all children come ready to learn and have fun with appropriate behavior at every rehearsal.

If you are interested in participating in chorus please complete and return the attached chorus contract by Wednesday, September 20th. Chorus will begin on Tuesday, September 26th.

I am very excited to work with your child to help them develop their musical talents. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. More information and chorus updates can be found on my website. You can find it on the Peter Woodbury webpage then click the tab Academics > PWS Staff > Specialists.

My child and I have discussed their interest in chorus and would like to participate. We understand that chorus will meet every Tuesday afternoon from 2:20 to 3:00 and that it is very important to participate with appropriate behavior and to attend as many rehearsals as possible. We also understand that habitual absences, late pick-ups or behavior issues could result in not performing with the chorus.

PWS Volunteers

There are so many ways for parents to be involved at Peter Woodbury and it's not too late to find out what you can do to be an even bigger part of our school community.  Use this link from PTG to find out and sign up for volunteer opportunities.  If you can make it, the volunteer orientation breakfast starts and 9am tomorrow.

Special All School Project!

Peter Woodbury Elementary School is coming together to create a river! A river of brightly colored unique rocks designed by each and every student at our school.

This project is inspired by the story Only One You written by Linda Kranz.  Mrs. Beltramo will read  the story to every class during library the week of September 18th.  This story is about a little fish named Adri who is getting ready to head out in the ocean alone.  His parents, in an effort to help guide him, share all the important lessons that they have learned in life such as:
“You don’t have to follow the crowd”
“Find your own way”
Always be on the lookout for a new friend”

Mrs. Beltramo, Mrs. Speaker and Mrs. Hart are asking that each student bring in a special rock that can fit in their fist.  These rocks will be painted at school to represent that we are unique and original.  Rocks that are smooth and flat (such as river rocks) will work best.  Grades 2, 3, and 4 will be painting their rocks in the library after hearing the story.  Kindergarten and first grade will be painting their rocks during another time block.  All students should bring in their rocks beginning Monday, September 18th.  Once all the rocks are painted, they will be formed into a colorful stone ‘“river” in the playground.

The important message for our students is that everyone one of us is unique and each of us have something to contribute!

Girls on the Run Coaches Needed

We are looking for coaches to coach Girls on the Run (GOTR) for fall 2017. It is an amazing program for 3rd and 4th grade girls! Our current PWS coaches are moving on to McKelvie.  Not only is this program rewarding for the girls, it is rewarding for the coaches.

A GOTR coach is a volunteer position that facilitates and supports the GOTR curriculum. The position requires approximately 2-4 hours per week for 10 weeks with the additional commitment of a one-time new coach training.  Coaches do not need to be runners.  They must be willing to lead with an open heart and assume positive intent.

Please help us spread the word to ensure that we are able to host a fall team at PWS! Contact with any questions!

Update to the Prosthetic Project

Back in November we were excited to share all about a prosthetic project that is happening for one of our second graders, Harun.  The students at ASD in Nashua have been working very hard and have been learning so much to create (3D print) Harun's prosthetic.  This process started in August 2016 when our Occupational Therapy Assistant, Penny Demos, got the ball rolling.  She has been working closely with the school and Enabling the Future all year long.

Today is very special day because Harun's mold was made to create a cast of his right arm for ASD to work with. Watch the video below to hear Harun explain his prosthetic.

Bags, Belts & Shoes - Donate and Recycle

In case you haven't heard Bedford DI had great success at the DI State Tournament last weekend at BHS.  Five of our teams won the opportunity of competing at the Global Finals in TN in May.  While the experience of going to the Global tournament will be priceless, it will cost the teams who choose to accept the invitation a considerable amount to make the trip.  Bedford DI is busy organizing fundraisers  and this Monday we kick it off with our annual Ecosmith, shoes, bags, and belt fundraiser.  In order to get credit for the special fundraiser, all items must be placed in the blue bags inside the boxes in the lobby of your school. Ecosmith takes shoes in all conditions, even that one shoe/sneaker who has lost it's mate!  All clothing and fabric in regular bags, can go directly into the Ecosmith bin in the parking lots.

Jump Rope for Heart

Our 4th annual Jump Rope for Heart event will take place during the month of March.  Students will learn heart healthy habits, risk factors for heart disease, how to help the community and practice many jumping skills.

Last year 2015-2016 Peter Woodbury School raised $17144 for the American Heart Association!  Thank you for all your generous donations!  Our new goal this year is to reach 17,500.

Our Jump Rope for Heart event kicked off this week in Physical Education class with a little video about a Heart Hero, Michael, who is 8 years old and was born with a heart condition. Thanks to the kids who have raised donations for the American Heart Association in the past Michael was able to have surgery to help his heart.  This week in Physical Education class we discussed heart disease to help students understand why they are raising money for the American Heart Association.  Collection envelopes are going home this week March 6-10 and must be returned by Friday March 31.  On line fundraising is much easier and more efficient.  The students don't have to deal with handing in money.  I have encouraged the students to make web pages by visiting and search for Peter Woodbury School using city and state.  Join our school's team and set up your own Web page to email family and friends.
