The day before . . .

break in December is always one filled with excitement and energy.  Peter Woodbury School started with an all school meeting this morning; allowing all the students and staff to come together to share in the festive feel.

At Peter Woodbury we continually learn about tolerance. Tolerance means understanding and respecting how we are different. Our fourth graders learned about different traditions and holidays that people celebrate around the world and how each culture is unique. The most special thing they learned is that though we have many different traditions during the holiday season, all of our traditions celebrate peace, generosity, and love. The video below is a sampling of different traditions from families in our school community.

To end our meeting and as a surprise to our students, Mrs. Curran (our music teacher) pulled together some brave teacher volunteers to form a chorus. Even though these teachers were nervous, they did a marvelous job! While the entire all school meeting warmed our hearts, there were two parts in particular that stand out. The first can be heard while the staff is singing Frosty the Snowman.  Listen carefully and you can hear all of our students joining in. Second was partnering with the fourth grade chorus for the final song.

Annual Food Drive

During this time of year we are increasingly aware of how fortunate we are to have good friends, loving families, a place to call home, and food to eat.  Unfortunately, we know that so many in our community are not as fortunate, and we feel that there is something we can do to help.  Since we know that food banks are always in need of food, Peter Woodbury is holding a food drive for the New Hampshire Food Bank.

Students can start bringing in canned goods, dry goods, and any other non-perishable food items this Friday.  Contributions are not required and we are aware that there are some many different ways, events, issues, and causes to donate to and one family certainly cannot do it all.  We'll kick off our food drive with a one item small donation this Friday, December 4th.  When 500 kids each do something small it adds up really fast; together we can really make a difference.  Next week we'll target items that are of particular need by having theme days (listed below).  All non-perishable items are appreciated and accepted. Thank you for considering this important effort and we wish everyone the best during the holidays.

Friday, 12/4 - Any item "Together we can make a difference!"
Monday, 12/7 - Mac & Cheese
Tuesday, 12/8 - Tuna
Wednesday, 12/9 - Cereal
Thursday, 12/10 - Peanut Butter
Friday, 12/11 - Soup

Thank you,
The Fourth Grade Team

Halloween Parade

Peter Woodbury's Annual Halloween Parade is coming up this Friday (Oct. 30) at 1:30.  Students will leave their classrooms and take the typical parade route.  Parents may view the parade in the back of the building (playground side) or along the edge of the sidewalk in front of the building.  We ask that you do not stand along the building.

Individual classroom celebrations are determined by each classroom teacher.  Anyone wishing to dismiss their child after the parade may do so in their child's classroom.

Operation Care for Troops

Once again, PWS is proud to assist Operation Care for Troops (formerly MooreMart) in its effort to support our troops by collecting items for holiday care packages. As of last year, MooreMart, now Operation Care for Troops (octnh.org), had shipped 65,637 packages to members of the United States armed services stationed around the world and stateside, to retired veterans residing at the Tilton Retirement Home, to local veterans homes in NH, as well as hospitalized veterans at Bethesda Medical Center in Washington DC. Operation Care for Troops will continue this same level of support.

If you would like to contribute to the packages that are sent to our United States service men and women, please send in any of the items on the list below on the specified day. There will be a collection bin in the foyer. Just look for the stars and stripes! If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Beltramo (beltramom@sau25.net).

Zones of Regulation Rap

Peter Woodbury School implements a program called the Zones of Regulation.  This program helps students learn how to stay in a zone (green) that is best for learning, while also learning it's okay to be in blue, yellow, or red sometimes.

With the help of Mrs. Clark, our guidance counselor, the Zones of Regulation Committee at PWS created a rap video to help the students remember what the zones are all about.

Constitution Day

“I Signed the Constitution” Day is Thursday, Sept. 17th.  Constitution Day was made an official holiday by Congress in 2004, and is normally observed on September 17th, the date on which the world’s oldest written constitution was signed into law in 1787.

On Thursday, September 17th all students at will sign the PWS Constitution. We invite students to join us as we celebrate our awareness and appreciation of our national constitution at PWS.  Boys are encouraged to wear vests or for a more accurate look, breeches (ending at the knee) with a collared shirt and knee socks. Girls are encouraged to wear aprons or collarless shirts and pull-on long skirts.  Support can also be shown by wearing red, white, and blue.

Open House

This year's Open House is on Tuesday, September 15th.  Open House gives parents an opportunity to meet their child's teacher.  It also gives our students the chance to show their parents around their classroom and the school.  If your child is in Grades K-2 then you should attend some time between 6pm and 7pm.  If your child is in grades 3 or 4 then you should attend some time between 7pm and 8pm.  We look forward to seeing everyone!
